As a result of natural ageing and depending on storage conditions, film is subject to progressive degradation. In the course of time, the resistance of NITRATE materials to mechanical forces decreases, base shrinks and loses flexibility.

Damages come into being during screening of the film, storage or transport of the carrier. They are characteristically shaped and distributed.

In terms of their causes, we can divide damages to film materials into:

mechanicalbiological and physicochemical.

It is also worth paying attenttion to the damages resulting from the production of the film. Flaws difficult to eradicate, which were sometimes copied again despite control.

During the production of the film, the following can occur: exposure overlapping with the image and soundtrack, unequal blackening of the surface of film frame, blurred image, differences in contrast and blackening between specific fragments of film connected with splices, exposure caused by electrostatic discharge, copying cracks and stains, flickering of the image, improper placing of titles or their illegibility, distortions of sound, or improper location of film frame. Faults that come into being during processing a film print were most often caused by the improper work of developing devices and the application of low-quality chemical solutions, indispensable during developing and fixing film materials.

The above damages can be eliminated exclusively by means of digital technology.
