Identification of the film base is one of the most essential examinations that determine the safe conditions for storage of the carrier. Nitrocellulose is the oldest film base produced for cinematographic purposes. Manufactured since 1899 until 1952, when a safe and equally durable base was invented. Non-inflammable film was acquired on the basis of diacetate (since 1924) and cellulose triacetate (since 1955), as well as polyester (in the early 1970s). The 70 mm, 16 mm and 8 mm films were produced on the safe ACETO base, but we seldom come across 16 mm films on inflammable base coming from the 1950s and the 1960s, manufactured in the USSR and China.

35 mm film produced before 1952 is undoubtedly highly inflammable!
