Strona główna / Digitalisation / Digital restoration

Digital reconstruction of an archival film involves restoring it in such a way so that its form and artistic values are as close as possible to the original ones: by editing, reconstructing missing fragments of the image or entire frames, retouching stains, scratches and other image anomalies.

NITROFILM Project – RECONSTRUCTION

The best material for reconstruction are tapes from the time when the film was produced. Unfortunately, surviving copies are usually incomplete, in a poor condition and mechanically damaged - hence they require intensive manual conservation. Many titles have survived in more than one copy and these copies are of different length and in a different technical condition. All existing materials can be used to produce a new version of the film which is as close to the original as possible. To restore the original sequence of film shots, filmographic studies are performed. The principle that applies to these activities is to interfere as little as possible with the aesthetic values of the source image. All resulting alterations are carefully monitored (so as not to generate the so-called digital artifacts). The results of this work and decisions made are documented. It also makes it necessary to carefully select the parameters of digital tools and to oversee every single frame of the restored movie.
