Film stock, similarly to other photographic materials is characterized by a layer structure, the basis of which is a transparent and flexible base that supports photosensitive photographic emulsion.

Nitrocellulose flexible celluloid was discovered by Hannibal Goodwin in 1887. In the following years, Emile Reynaud introduced the first perforated film stock. Owing to the works of the company Eastman Kodak, which produced dry gelatine emulsion, transparent celluloid began to be used as the film base, superseding the former paper base.
