Irena is an unhappy wife of a rich industrial tycoon. She feels very lonely - her husband has had no time for his family for years, while her sons are all grown up and occupied with their own lives. As a joke, her son Richard, while introducing her to his friend, claims that she is his sister. When, soon afterwards, Irena wants to correct the mistake, it is already too late - Jerzy has already fallen in love with her and she cannot resist him. Irena's affair is exposed and she has to choose between her family and her lover. She leaves her home and decides to live with Jerzy in his mountain cabin.

One day, during a blizzard, Jerzy rescues Tamara, a young and beautiful tourist, from a blizzard. Tamara's grateful parents invite Jerzy and Irena to their house, but Irena decides to stay at home. During that time, she is visited by Jerzy's grandmother and she sensibly assess her chances for a common future with Jerzy. After the conversation, Irena decides to give his freedom back to Jerzy and goes on a trip around Europe. She spends her time in casinos and night clubs, but finally runs out of money. She uses what is left of it to come back to Warsaw. Realizing that she lost everything she had, Irena decides to commit suicide. On the street she meets her son, who takes her home. The family forgives Irena and takes her back.
