Alojzy Kędziorek, a poor composer, lives in a tenement house in Warsaw. He is mutually in love with Renia Sagankiewicz, house host’s daughter. However, her mother wants the girl to marry Maciej Baleron, a rich meat producer. Hipek, Alojzy’s neighbour, borrows from him a tailcoat in order to earn some additional money, working as a waiter at a party held by the house hosts. When the guests start demanding music for dancing, Hipek ask Alojzy to join them and sit at the piano. Renia is delighted with an unexpected encounter while Alojzy sings for her his new song entitled Każdemu wolno kochać. Soon, a bailiff shows up at his apartment, and despite being enchanted with Alojzy’s music, he requisites his piano.

The Jolly Zander Theatre is on the verge of bankruptcy. Preparations for a new revue are underway. The bailiff whistles the musical theme overheard at Alojzy’s place. The manager Pech and director Bobek are very pleased with the tune and goes to Kędziorek to buy the song for the new revue. They make a deal with Hipek, as Alojzy does not have any time, being occupied with organizing Renia’s and her parents’ journey to their mansion in Świntucha just bought by Baleron. The musician runs to the station to say goodbye to his lover but is late. He sets off on the next train.

Hipek, who received an invitation from director Pech, arrives at the premiere in the company of Lodzia, Sagankiewicz’s maid. The song Każdemu wolno kochać is a great success. Hipek is presented as its author.

Alojzy accidentally gets off at the Wygłupin station. He reaches the estate of Baleron on foot, then he lets Reni know and they have a date on the next day. Baleron is a witness of their meeting. He sends his people to deal with the rival. During the fight, he falls into the water, while Alojzy breaks free from the attackers and run away. In Wygłupin he happens upon the opening of the Institute for Distressed and Stupefied. There is no patient in it yet. The captured Alojzy, recognized as the first madman in Wygłupin, is welcomed with ovation. He is sent to be treated in a solitary confinement. However, Professor Robaczek does not recommend isolation. The mayor of the city engages thus the members of an orchestra to pretend to be madmen and keep Alojzy company. They play the latest hit Każdemu wolno kochać and say that the composer made a fortune at it. The Professor takes Alojzy for a special treatment, from which he manages to escape.

The hundredth show of Każdemu wolno kochać is held at the Jolly Zander Theatre. At Reni’s request, Baleron invites her parents. Alojzy also appears in the theatre. Hipek presents him as the real author of the hit song. Renia abandons Baleron, and together with Alojzy, Hipek and Lodzia participates in the final of the revue.
