Aniuta is Russian general Pankratov’s daughter. His superiors resent him for marrying a Polish woman against their will. To win their appreciation, he decides to marry his daughter to the Russian officer, count Bobrov. Aniuta, being a witness to a street dragnet, rescues a female Polish revolutionary. She also meets a rebel named Bolesław. Aniuta takes interest in her Polish origins and feels more and more Polish. She cancels her engagement with Bobrov. While trying to find her family, she finds out that Bolesław is her relative. She saves him during a search of his home.

Bolesław shoots at general Pankratov, being designated to do so by his superiors. The general is seriously wounded, while Bolesław is arrested and sentenced to death. Aniuta is able to forge documents granting a pardon for Bolesław. She frees him from the prison, takes him abroad and commits suicide, throwing herself into the river.
