After his wife’s death, the poet Ludwik Poraj needs to take care of his beloved daughter, little Iwonka. She has grown up to be a beautiful maiden. Soon afterwards, her father dies in a duel after being caught in a romance. The girl is raised up by Ludwik’s friend, the Swedish diplomat Olinstiern.

Without the diplomat’s knowledge, Iwonka starts to work as a governess at Wyszomirski’s court in the Eastern Borderlands, to pay back her father’s debt. Bogdan, owner’s son, falls in love with the girl but she has feelings for Jerzy, lancer’s lieutenant, who, together with his squadron, guards the surrounding courts from bandits.

During one of the robberies, Iwonka mounts a horse and goes to seek for help. She is caught by Gabriel, a demonic chief of a mysterious mob. Luckily, she manages to sneak out. After numerous adventures, she is found by Bohdan and brought back to the mansion, where they find out that the mansion was in the meantime burnt down by the bandits.

Iwonka and Jerzy declare each other’s love. Soon thereafter Olinstiern appears and tempts the girl to begin studies in Warsaw. He also proposes to her, but she refuses. Olinstiern leaves to Sweden. When Iwonka learns about bloody fights in the Eastern Borderlands, she joins Jerzy and gets married with him.
