Rafał Wilczur is a well-known and praised surgeon. One day, his wife Beata runs away with her lover Janek. She takes Rafał and Beata’s daughter Marysia with them. Being devastated, Rafał goes to a bar, where he falls victim to a brutal assault and robbery, resulting in a loss of memory. Severed from reality, he wanders from village to village, until being taken in by the miller Prokop. He becomes a popular quack with the peasants from the area.

Many years later, Janek is killed in a car accident and Beata has to work as a tapper in a cinema to support her and her daughter. She dies of exhaustion, and Marysia steps up to perform her job. She is in love with Leszek, but his parents do not allow them to marry. One day, they both become heavily injured in a motorcycle accident near the village the quack lives in. Doctor Dobraniecki, who is called for help, claims they cannot be saved. The quack steals his tools and performs an operation on Marysia, which saves her life. He is taken to prison for a theft, but the intervention of grateful peasants allows him to regain his freedom. In the court, Dobraniecki recognizes the quack as professor Wilczur. Marysia takes her benefactor to her mother's tomb and there the quack regains his memory. Professor Wilczur goes back to work at a Warsaw clinic while Marysia marries Leszek.
