Ryszard Malewicz invented an explosive of incredible strength. He sent the plan of his invention to the ministry and has been constantly awaiting an answer ever since. He and his mother are barely able to make ends meet. Ryszard is also being watched by a gang of criminals interested in his invention. Baron, one of its members, offers a great amount of money for the formula, but Ryszard declines his offer. He claims that only the state can guarantee a proper use of his invention. Finally, he receives an invitation from the ministry to Warsaw.

The criminals follow him. The train has an accident. In the confusion, Baron and his accomplices manage to abduct Ryszard, leaving his identification with the body of a killed man. Ryszard's mother and his fiancée Maria learn of his death, but Maria still believes that Ryszard is alive. Irma, also a member of the gang, goes to Vilnius to fetch Ryszard's mother and finally obtains the explosive recipe. She encounters Maria, who prays at the painting of the Lady of the Gate of Dawn. Seeing her, Irma undergoes a spiritual change. Tormented with grief, she helps Ryszard to escape, though being herself killed in the shooting. Ryszard goes back to his mother and his fiancée.
