Maryjka is a young girl living close to a village but outside its community. Nobody knows who she exactly is, as she has no identification documents. The women of the village contemptuously call her The Stray and claim that she brings bad luck to the village. They hate her even more because she is an attractive girl who catches the eyes of many husbands. For some time, an aggressive and possessive man called Dmytro has been cheating with her on his wife Horpyna. Also the Vogt tries to win Maryjka's favour, but his efforts are futile.

Dmytro starts a fight in an inn and gets killed. His killer is a young vagabond called Jur. Maryjka finds him wounded in the nearby forest and takes him to his house. Wasyl, one of the villagers, discovers that Maryjka is harbouring a killer. An enraged mob assaults Maryjka. To distract the attackers, Wasyl opens a dam on the river. The waves carry away Horpyna's children and Jur is the one who saves them. The embarrassed peasants leave him be. Jur and Maryjka leave together.
