Jurek is a good looking and likeable assistant in a shop with women's clothing. He attracts a crowd of female customers. On New Year's Eve, he accidentally finds himself on a ball organized by Mr. and Mrs. Porecki. He is mistaken for the lawyer Chełmoński. During the ball, Jurek meets Ania, Poreckis’s daughter. The young couple falls in love. After some time, Jurek confesses to Ania that he is merely a shop assistant. Ania tells him, that due to their tragic financial situation, her parents want her to marry Kracht. Jurek does whatever is in his power to foil the marriage, which results in him losing his job. However, he discovers that Krach is also in financial dire straits and that he is hoping for a high dowry. The shop manager, frightened with the fact that less women come to his shop after the disappearance of Jurek, offers him a very big raise just to make him come back to work. Now, nothing stands in the way of Ania and Jurek's happiness.
